Irish civil war documentary ‘The Siege 1922’ – or ‘An Léigear 1922’ – premieres on TG4 at 9.30pm the 23rd of October.
The sequel to 2011’s critically acclaimed ‘The Treaty 1921’ (‘An Conradh 1921’), the film is the second part of a planned trilogy produced by Fastnet Film for TG4, the first having aired on the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty.
Using never before seen archive footage, the film relates the events of just ten days that altered the course of Irish history forever – from the opening salvo across the river Liffey to Cathal Brugha’s dramatic shootout from an O’Connell Street hotel.
Reconstructing the events of those crucial days, the film uses a wealth of film and photographs from Irish, American and British archives, as well as diary entries, soldiers' letters, personal accounts and oral testimonies of civilians, to tell the definitive story of one of the most pivotal and brutal events in Ireland’s history.
Narrated by Macdara Ó Fátharta of ‘Ros na Rún’ fame, ‘An Léigear 1922’ also features voiceovers from some of Ireland’s most well-known actors, including Peter Coonan (‘Love/Hate’s Fran), Dar Devaney (‘Raw’) and comedian and actor Mario Rosenstock.
Produced by Morgan Bushe and Lucia Gavin of Fastnet Films, the film features cinematography by Piers McGrail, editing by Eoin McDonagh, and is directed by two-time IFTA Winner Andrew Gallimore. ‘An Léigear 1922’ received funding under the Broadcast Authority Ireland’s Sound and Vision Scheme.
