Irish-Scandinavian co-production ‘Call Girl’ has been nominated for the European Discovery 2013 Prix FIPRESCI – an annual award presented by the European Film Academy to acknowledge young, up and coming directors who have recently completed their first feature.
‘Call Girl’, which was co-produced by Newgrange Pictures and partially funded by the Irish Film Board, is one of five films nominated, with other nominees including Swedish ‘Eat Sleep Die’ from Gabriela Pichler and German ‘Oh Boy’, written and directed by Jan Ole Gerster.
‘Call Girl’ follows Iris, a young girl who falls in with sex clubs, strip shows and prostitution in 1970’s Stockholm. The film was directed by Mikael Marcimain (‘Wallander’, ‘How Soon Is Now?’) and stars Sofia Karemyr and Pernilla August. Visual effects were completed at the post-production studios in Dublin-based Windmill Lane.
Previous wins include the Fipresci Award at the Toronto Inernational Film Festival, as well as a nomination for Best Film at this year’s Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema.
The shortlist is compiled by a committee of respected EFA panelists and members of FIPRESCI (the International Federation of Film Critics), with the recipient of the final award to be selected all EFA members. The awards ceremony will take in Berlin on December 7th 2013.
