‘Call Girl’, a Swedish thriller co-produced by Dublin-based Newgrange Pictures and partly funded by the Irish Film Board, is currently screening in the Light House Cinema and IFI.
Winner of the Fipresci award at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the film tells the story of a young woman named Iris who becomes involved in a world of sex clubs, strip shows and prostitution, in 1970s Stockholm.
A Swedish/Norwegian/Irish/Finnish co-production, ‘Call Girl’ also utilised Windmill Lane in Dublin for its post-production visual effects.
The film is directed by Mikael Marciman (‘Wallander’), with director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema (‘The Fighter’, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’), and stars Swedish actress Pernilla August, who played Anakin Skywalker’s mother in ‘Star Wars’ Episodes 1 and 2.
Newgrange Pictures won five IFTA awards for ‘Kings’, starring Colm Meaney, in 2008 and the IFTA for Best Drama in 2009 for ‘Whistleblower’.
‘Call Girl’ was also nominated for Best Film at this year’s Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema and is inspired by such 70’s thrillers as ‘All The President’s Men’, ‘Three Days for Condor’ and ‘Serpico’.
