‘Sex Pistols’ documentary director Julien Temple; Ros and John Hubbard of Hubbard casting behind ‘The Hobbit’; Star Trek’s Spock; and ‘Batman Returns’ screenwriter Daniel Waters all head up this year’s Masterclass line-up at the Galway Film Fleadh.
Directors Masterclass
Julien Temple - director of ‘The Filth and the Fury’ - will helm this year’s Directors Masterclass, in association with Screen Training Ireland on Thursday 11th July.
His interest in the early punk scene in London in 1976 led to his friendship with The Sex Pistols, resulting in controversial documentary The Great Rock and Roll Swindle (1980) - before becoming a music video pioneer in the 80s, directing projects for The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, David Bowie, Neil Young and Janet Jackson.
Other projects Temple worked on include ‘Jazzin’ for Blue Jean’ (1984) ‘The Comic Strip’ (1981), ‘Absolute Beginners’ (1986), ‘Earth Girls Are Easy’ (1988), and the Sex Pistols ‘The Filth and the Fury’ (2000).
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Thursday the 11th of July in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.

Casting Workshop
Ros and John Hubbard, of Hubbard casting which launched the careers of ‘Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ actors, will host the casting workshop on 13th July.
Casting Director Ros Hubbard, who is from Dublin, set up Hubbard Casting with her husband John, in 1976 and now works from their headquarters in London and Dublin.
Their children, Dan and Amy, have since joined them- with Amy's recent work including ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Selfish Giant’ and ‘Our Robot Overlords’.
Dan recently completed ‘Captain Phillips’, directed by Paul Greengrass and is currently casting ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Suite Francaise’ directed by Saul Dibb.
The Hubbard notable discoveries include Orlando Bloom, whom they cast in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Kate Winslet, and they currently have Aidan Turner and James Nesbitt starring in The Hobbit.
John and Ros are also currently casting ‘Dracula’ for Irish director Gary Shore and NBC Universal.
With places limited, all successful applicants must bring an updated CV and headshot with them on the day, and have a monologue prepared and ready to perform - no longer than one minute.
Applicants must be over 17 years of age and the workshop costs €50 and will take place on Saturday the 13th of July in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.

Acting Masterclass
As previously announced, Star Trek’s newest incarnation of Spock, Zachary Quinto, will give this year’s acting masterclass, in association with Hubbard Casting and Screen Training Ireland.
In JJ Abrams’ recent ‘Star Trek’ reboot and follow-up ‘Star trek Into Darkness’, Quinto matched his predecessor Leonard Nimoy in handling a role that required complete restraint in the face of emotion as the universe’s most famous Vulcan.
The actor has also starred in such TV shows as ‘24’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘American Horror Story’, as well as producing and starring in ‘Margin Call’.
John Hubbard will host the masterclass, which will provide an intensive interactive environment in the skills, methodology and aesthetics of film acting aimed at actors working or wanting to work more in film.
The masterclass will cover such topics including: starting out as an actor ; dealing with casting directors ; securing an agent; preparing for an audition; working on set; relationship with the director.
Places are limited and all applicants must be over 18 years of age and submit a CV and headshot in order to be considered for a place.
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Friday 12th July in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.

Screenwriting Masterclass
Daniel Waters - writer of ‘Heathers’, ‘Batman Returns’ and ‘Demolition Man’ - will deliver this year’s Screenwriting Masterclass, in association with IADT.
Arriving in Los Angeles in the 80's, Waters worked as a video store clerk before his screenwriting career took off with dark comedy ‘Heathers’, which re-defined the teen film genre.
A Hollywood career followed, during which time he wrote ‘The Adventures of Ford Fairlane’ (1990), ‘Hudson Hawk’ (1991), ‘Batman Returns’ (1992) and Demolition Man (1993), which predicted Arnold Schwarzenegger's political future.
The masterclass will be facilitated by Mary Kate O Flanagan, who has designed and delivered training for screenwriters across Europe from USC since 2006 and is a lecturer at The National Film School in Ireland and FAMU in Prague.
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Thursday 11th July in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.
The event is supported by the MA in Screenwriting at the National Film School, IADT.
