Short Film Round-up: ‘Princess Rehab’, ‘Lunchtime’ & ‘Lucky Escape’
14 Jun 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
'Princess Rehab' sees fairytale characters tackle modern issues.
Caroline Grace-Cassidy’s new short about princesses in rehab is set to make its debut in Galway, Andrew Barry’s fantasy musical is selected for Palm Springs, and Shane McCabe’s ‘Lucky Escape’ is picked up for distribution in the US.

‘Princess Rehab’ selected for Galway Film Fleadh

Actress and author Caroline Grace-Cassidy’s new short film ‘Princess Rehab’, which she co-wrote and stars in, has been chosen to screen at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.

Ms Grace-Cassidy’s literary career took off last year with the publication of her first book ‘Love Lessons’ by Poolbeg Press and has a long list of acting credits to her name including roles in ‘Your Highness’, ‘Fair City’ and ‘The Guards’.

The storyline looks at what happens when traditional fairytale princesses face modern day addictions with nods to NAMA, infidelity, plastic surgery, which all combine to cause chaos for a number of princesses in rehab.

Ms Grace-Cassidy told IFTN this week of her delight at ‘Princess Rehab’s selection for Galway.

‘It’s always extra special to show at the Fleadh. This work was a collaboration and we are very grateful to all involved especially Kevin Cassidy who produced for Park Pictures,' she said.

The cast and crew include Fair City actresses Sarah Flood and Sorcha Furlong, Elaine Hearty (‘Jo and Jack’) and Jenn McGuirk; editor Paul Power and director of photography Emmett Harte.

‘Lunchtime’ selected for Palm Springs Shortfest this 21st June

Irish filmmaker Andrew Barry fantasy musical short ‘Lunchtime - written & directed by Mr Barry and produced by Ian Jackson - has been selected to screen at the Palm Springs Shortfest on Friday 21st June.

Featuring animals of the Serengeti costumes designed by Sadhbh Doherty and Claire Gerraghty, the screening will be the film’s North American and international premiere.

Among the cast and crew are stars Doireann O'Byrne and Ronan Byrne; director of photography Piers McGrail; composer Michael Fleming; choreographer Lisa Tyrell of Why Not Dance Company; line producer Susan Dolan and chief make-up artist Edwina Kelly.

In keeping with the short’s darkly humorous tone, it carries the slogan ‘It’s a jungle out there, not fit for man nor beast…well, beasts maybe.’

‘Lucky Escape’ picked up for US distribution by Shorts TV

Irish short ‘Lucky Escape - directed, written and produced by filmmaker Shane McCabe - has been picked up by Network Ireland Television as part of their distribution deal with Shorts TV in the US.

The four-minute short, filmed on location in Rathfarnham village, focuses on a high powered career woman’s efforts to break up with her boyfriend with unexpected consequences.

The all-Irish cast includes Vanessa Keogh (‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘The Clinic’, ‘Fair City’, ‘The Tudors’) and José Mantero (‘Bitterness’, ‘Fair City’, ‘Hooligans’, ‘3 Crosses’, ‘WC’).

‘Lucky Escape’ had its world premiere at the prestigious 11th Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival and was later picked up for distribution at the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and sold to Latin America territories.

Mr McCabe is currently in post-production on his latest short ‘Incompatible’, a sci-fi comedy about a jailed Wall Street embezzler who falls in love with a damaged android.
