Now in its seventh year, the Guth Gafa International Documentary Festival officially opens tomorrow, Thursday 16th May - with RTE News, TG4 and radio crews set to cover the opening night.
This year’s festival will take place for the first time in Malin Village, Co Donegal from 16-19th May, with a selection of films also screening in Derry, as part of the festival’s partnership with Derry as City of Culture 2013.
Festival co-ordinator David Rane told IFTN that they are delighted with the national media coverage being given to Guth Gafa this year, with the festival having already featured on RTE 1 Arts Show ‘The Works’ and with an upcoming appearance on RTE Radio One’s Morning Ireland.
Donegal’s radio station, Highland Radio, will also be broadcasting its main morning chat show live from Guth Gafa on Friday morning; the Irish Times will attend the four-day event; and BBC Radio Foyle has been featuring Guth Gafa on several cultural and music shows.
Highlights of this year's festival include ‘Blood Brother’, directed by Steven Hoover, about a tourist in India who met a group of children with HIV and he decided to stay and devote his life to them; ‘Give Us the Money’, directed by Bosse Lindquist, in which Bono, Bob Geldof and Bill Gates discuss how to influence politicians to give to charitable causes; and ‘The Summit’, directed by Nick Ryan, about heroic Irish mountain climber Ger McDonnell who died on K2 in 2008, saving as many lives as he could before the end.
