IndieCork Film Festival Announced with Ken Loach as Honorary Patron
17 Apr 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Silver lining for Mick Hannigan and Úna Feely.
Following their shock dismissal as CEO and programmer of the Cork Film Festival, Mick Hannigan and Úna Feely have returned with an alternative, dedicated to independent cinema – the new IndieCork Film Festival, set to launch on 1 May and planned for 16-20 Oct.

Ken Loach - prolific director and winner of the Palmes d’Or for ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’ - has been named as honorary patron, in a move that instantly lends serious gravitas to the fledgling festival.

‘Throughout his career, Ken Loach has resisted the lure of Hollywood yet found international success and acclaim. IndieCork is thrilled that he immediately agreed to our invitation, citing his support for the vision of this new festival,’ Ms Feely said.

Mr Hannigan was enthusiastic about how independent cinema will be prioritised in this pioneering addition to the Irish film festival landscape.

‘This is an exciting new venture, bringing independent cinema to independent-minded audiences. All the soundings we've taken point to enthusiasm for a festival which celebrates short films and independent documentaries and features. We are looking forward to creating an exciting and culturally rich event in October. We have had widespread support from our network of film contacts in Ireland and Internationally. We want to preserve Cork's reputation as a city that champions independent cinema,’ he said.

Adopting a film fan membership structure inspired by Cork City football club, supporters of IndieCork will be invited to buy a share in the festival, thereby becoming part owners and trustees.

Using traditional venues but also new screening spaces in the city, IndieCork will take place over five days from October 16 to 20 – with the full plan set to be unveiled at its official launch on 1 May.

Ms Feely expressed her delight at creating a niche festival for Cork, as one of its founders.

‘The emphasis will be on independent cinema. We look forward to being creative with the notion of independence, creating interesting events not only centred on screenings. We will offer diversity in our programming and support emerging filmmakers. We believe that this kind of vision and festival is suited to Cork and its rebel spirit,’ she said.
