The Hardy Bucks have certainly come a long way since winning RTE’s Storyland competition in September 2009.
Last month, 'The Hardy Bucks Movie', which follows the boys as they travel to Poland to support Ireland in the Euro 2012 tournament, became an instant hit with audiences when it was released in cinemas around the country.
In its opening weekend, the film version of the TV series became the highest-grossing new release in Ireland, debuting at number 2 at the box office and earning an impressive €176,877 from 57 locations.
With an already-established cult following, their transition from the small screen to the big screen has seen their popularity soar. The film has been rated as one of the best Irish comedies ever made and has claimed the honour of being the eighth biggest opening weekend of all time for an Irish comedy at the Irish box office.
General Manager of Universal Pictures, David Burke says, “We are over the moon with the success of The Hardy Bucks at the Irish box office. The lads have produced a fantastically funny film that has proved their wide appeal and the fact that there is a huge appetite for Irish comedy on the Big Screen.”
To date, The Hardy Bucks Movie has taken over €400,000 at the Republic of Ireland box office.
Due to the success of the film, Universal Pictures are responding to demand by expanding the film’s release into Northern Ireland on April 5th, where they plan to show it on 20 more screens.
