‘Hell on Wheels’, the popular AMC western starring Irish actor Colm Meaney, has been picked up for a third season following the success of the season two finale in the US this October.
Meaney stars as real-life railroad investor Thomas ‘Doc’ Durant in the 19th century period drama. The series sees Durant invest in the first transcontinental railroad in a bid to earn a great fortune. The train is occupied by labourers, mercenaries, prostitutes and investors in the series.
The second series is currently airing on RTÉ Two in Ireland, while the season two finale aired to an average of 2.4 million viewers in the US in early October. AMC has reportedly ordered a further 10 episodes for season three, which will see show creators Joe and Tony Gayton step down as executive producers, according to Deadline.
‘Hell on Wheels’ is an Entertainment One and Endemol USA production. John Shiban, Jeremy Gold and David Von Ancken are executive producers, with Shiban expected to take over the day-to-day duties from the Gayton brothers.
Meaney is expected to reprise his role as Durant for season three. The actor meanwhile currently has two projects in post-production – Irish-American co-production ‘The Yank’, which he shot in Clare earlier this year, and Christian E. Christiansen’s thriller ‘The Occult’, which is due for release in 2013.
‘Hell on Wheels’ is on RTÉ Two on Fridays at 9pm.
