Tickets for the Corona Cork Film Festival are on sale today, where Martin McDonagh’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ and Kirsten Sheridan’s ‘Dollhouse’ are among the 300 films screening.
The annual festival returns for its 57th event on November 11, opening with American filmmaker Bill Morrison’s ‘The Great Flood’, a documentary inspired by the Mississippi River flood of 1927. Acclaimed American musician and composer Bill Frisell will give a live performance during the screening, taking place at the Cork Opera House.
Among the Irish titles screening at the festival are Kirsten Sheridan’s ‘Dollhouse’, which has been sweeping the awards circuit of late with recognition at the Odessa International Film Festival and the Irish Film New York Festival, and Donald Taylor Black’s ‘Skin in the Game’ documentary, which will receive its world premiere at the festival.
Local stories including the recent Vita Cortex workers’ dispute and the true story of Josephine Brown, a woman who agreed to spy for the IRA in Cork’s Victoria Barracks on condition that the IRA kidnap her son from her in-laws in the UK, will both be told in documentary form in titles called ‘161 Days: The Vita Cortex Workers Struggle’ and ‘Am an Gháthair’.
International titles screening include Cannes Film Festival-winning feature ‘Reality’; Hugh Laurie-starring ‘The Oranges’; and the South Korean comedy ‘In Another Country’, starring multi award-winning French actress Isabelle Huppert.
This year’s festival is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of Paramount Pictures, by showing classic films such as ‘Harold and Maude’ and ‘The African Queen’, following their digital restoration.
Over 30 programmes of local, Irish and international short films are also included on the bill, as well as a special tribute to the late influential filmmaker Paddy Jolley, whose credits include the award-winning ‘Drowning Room’, ‘HereAfter’ and ‘The Door Ajar’.
Commenting on Corona’s sponsorship of the Corona Cork Film Festival after six years, Irish distributor Michael Barry, MD of Barry & Fitzwilliam, said: “It is encouraging to see a festival that is now in its 57th year continue to thrive and bring a refreshing new mix of features, shorts and documentaries to film enthusiasts from Ireland and abroad and this year looks more exciting than ever. The partnership has been a resounding success for Corona Extra.”
Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ will close the festival on November 18, marking its Irish premiere. Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken star in the dark comedy.
