Irish documentary ‘Broken Tail: A Tiger’s Last Journey’ has been nominated for two News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

The nature programme, developed by Irish company Crossing the Line Productions, has been nominated for Outstanding Nature Programming and Outstanding Cinematography. The documentary follows Dublin wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford Johnson as he tracks the journey of a broken-tailed tiger in India.

John Murray of Crossing the Line was the producer and co-director on the shoot while Stafford Johnson also directed, with Cepa Giblin producing. IFTA-winner Emer Reynolds (My Brothers) edited, while Siobhan Ward (Treasure Of The Bogs) was the production manager. Both Murray and Johnson were the cinematographers along with Robin Cox (Human Planet).

Commenting on the nominations, director Murray said “we are delighted that ‘Broken Tail’ has been honoured in this way by the Emmys with such truly formidable opposition as the very best output of the BBC & Discovery. It is an Irish film about an Indian subject that has hit a chord with primetime audiences worldwide.”

‘Broken Tails’ opposition in the Outstanding Nature Programming category is ‘My Life as a Turkey’, which was executive produced by PBS Nature’s Fred Kaufman, and ‘Polar Bear Spy on Ice’, produced by Philip Dalton (Swarm: Nature’s Incredible Invasions).

It is also up against Discovery Channel’s ‘Human Planet’, Animal Planet’s ‘Madagascar’ and PBS documentaries ‘My Life as a Turkey’, ‘Bears of the Last Frontier’ and ‘Armadillo’ in the Cinematography category.

‘Broken Tails’ received funding from RTÉ, the Irish Film Board, BCB in Canada, ZDF and SWR in Germany, BBC UK and PBS in America.

The Emmy Awards celebrating the best in News and Documentary television will be announced on October 1 in the Time Warner Center in New York.
