Michael Fassbender Signs Up For 'Assassin's Creed'
10 Jul 2012 :
Irish actor Michael Fassbender
IFTA-winning actor Michael Fassbender has signed up to star in the film adaptation of popular video game franchise ‘Assassin's Creed’.

The Irish actor will also co-produce the feature film, according to French games company Ubisoft who created the franchise.

Speaking to Variety, Ubisoft’s Jean-Julien Baronnet said: “Michael Fassbender was our first choice.” He added that the actor was “extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed.”

Last seen in ‘Prometheus’, Fassbender is currently filming ‘Twelve Years A Slave’ with British director Steve McQueen, whom Fassbender previously worked with on ‘Shame’ and ‘Hunger’.

The Kerry-raised actor has also signed up for a sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class,’ in which he played Magneto. He picked up his IFTA in February for his role in ‘Shame’.

‘Assassin's Creed is one of the biggest-selling games of recent times, with more than 30 million copies sold. It depicts a family line of assassins and their conflict with the Knights Templar, which spans the Crusades, the Italian Renaissance and, in a forthcoming instalment, the American War of Independence.

Ubisoft is developing the Assassin's Creed film by itself, after talks with Sony collapsed last year. The games company recently founded a new movie wing, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, to help bring its titles to the big screen.
