RTÉ has been urged by British and Irish parliamentarians not to close its London office. A motion calling on RTÉ to re-consider its decision last month top shout the UK office was made at a meeting of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly held in Dublin on Monday (May 14).
RTÉ is currently involved in a major cost-cutting move and is facing losses of €50m in 2012. As part of plans to save millions by next year, management at the State broadcaster has decided to shut the London office.
TDs from Ireland and MPs from Britain have united in their opposition to the closure claiming that it would adversely affect Britain’s Irish community.
In a joint statement the British and Irish parliamentarians urged the Irish and British governments to support keeping the RTÉ London correspondent and assist in the search for “alternatives to closure”.
