Debut Novel Lands Film Deal For Irish Author Ava McCarthy
01 May 2012 : By Eva Hall
Book deal Ava McCarthy
Dublin-based author Ava McCarthy has signed a deal with Hollywood production company Polaris Pictures to bring her debut novel ‘The Insider’ to the big screen.

Published in 2009, McCarthy’s thriller was written following a hiatus from the software company job that inspired her novel. ‘The Insider’ is centred on a female former computer hacker named Harry Martinez, who has shifted careers to become a private eye.

The novel is set in both in Dublin and the Bahamas, with Irish-Spanish character Harry described as a “feisty, heroic rule breaker”. The feature is expected to film in Ireland, although at this early stage no names are attached to the project.

The next step in the process will see Polaris Pictures taking on a scriptwriter and getting more Irish people on board to fill up crew roles.

Blackrock-native McCarthy is looking forward to the production getting off the ground, admitting it was “very thrilling” to sign on the dotted line. She added that she was “quite pleased” the production company has Ireland in mind for a filming location, admitting she was glad main character Harry will remain as she is described in the novels.

Harper Collins in the UK published McCarthy’s series of books, which have been translated into 13 different languages internationally. The second instalment ‘The Courier’ was released in 2010 and the third book ‘Hide Me’ hit the shelves in 2011.

Polaris Pictures previously brought Irish drama ‘Talk of Angels’ to the big screen, starring Polly Walker (Clash of the Titans) and Vincent Perez (A Butterfly Kiss), with ‘Killing Bono’ director Nick Hamm at the helm.

McCarthy is currently writing the fourth instalment of the cyber-sleuth series.
