‘Titanic’ gave TV3 their biggest Sunday night TV audience of the year with an average of more than a quarter of million viewers tuning into the first episode of the four-part series from screenwriter Julian Fellowes.

Speaking to IFTN, Ben Frow, the station’s director of programming, said: It was our best Sunday night show of the year so I’m obviously delighted with the figures.”

‘Titanic’ was watched by an average of 230,700 reaching a peak of 505,000 viewers, according to figures from TV3.

The station did not reveal how much of an audience share those figures represented.

The viewing figures will prove particularly pleasing to Frow who last week told IFTN: “There is no doubt that ‘Titanic’ will rate on Sunday. I’ve never said that in my life before and this one could come back and bite me, but I’d be stunned if it does.”

In the UK, ‘Titanic’ was screened on ITV1 and averaged 7.4million viewers.

The four-part series continues on both stations this Sunday night from 9pm and features a strong Irish cast, which includes Maria Doyle-Kennedy, Ruth Bradley and Peter McDonald.

The series was co-produced by TV3, who invested €300,000 into the €15m budget. It is executive produced by David Collins of Irish production company Samson Films.
