Irish actor Michael Fassbender is to reunite with helmer McQueen for ’12 Years a Slave’. Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men, American Gangster) will join Fassbender in the feature which tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, a New York citizen who was kidnapped in Washington in 1841 and sold to a cotton plantation in Louisiana, where he was enslaved for over a decade, before being rescued in 1853. McQueen co-wrote the script for ‘12 Years a Slave’ with John Ridley (U Turn).
Fasssbender and McQueen have previously worked together on ‘Hunger’ and ‘Shame’. Fassbender’s portrayal of sex addict businessman Brandon in ‘Shame’ earned him a Best Actor Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival in September. ‘Hunger’ was also critically lauded clocking up awards including six IFTAs, the Cannes Golden Camera award, a BAFTA for McQueen for most promising newcomer and EFA award of best Discovery of the year.
‘12 Years a Slave’ will be produced by Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B, with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner producing. Production is set to begin early next year. CAA is arranging financing for feature and will represent U.S. rights.
