Culture Night 2011 will take place on Friday September 23rd and sees cultural organisations the length and breadth of Ireland open their doors for free outdoor and indoor events, including screenings, exhibitions, guided tours, workshops and live performances.

A range of demonstrations and talks will take place at the historic Windmill Lane Audio and Film Studios as well as in its Videogaming lab. Studio 1 will play host to live gigs with folk singer Moya Brennan and friends, and talks by Stuart Clark of Hot Press about the world of music. The open night is from 6.30pm – 11pm at Windmill Lane Recording Studios in Dublin’s Ringsend.

More film based events taking place for Culture Night include a talk from Director Conor Horgan (One Hundred Mornings) at the Ranelagh Arts Centre at 6pm and a screening of RADE’s (Recovery through Art, Drama and Education) Dublin short film trilogy: ‘Today’, ‘Hard Day’ and ‘Birthday’ at the OLV Building, Cathedral View Court, Dublin 8. The trilogy of short comedies were all filmed in Dublin over the past three years and tell the wacky and funny stories of the lives of ordinary people.

Filmbase will also open their doors for Culture Night, with Irish shorts being screened on the ground floor from 5pm until 11pm. Some of the shorts featured include ‘Alive’ by Traolach O’Murchu, Stephen Kane’s ‘The Incredible Shrinking Office’, Conor Horgan’s ‘Deep End Dance’ and Ross Whittaker and Aideen O’Sullivan’s documentary short ‘Bye Bye Now’. Shorts will also be screened in the Filmbase basement at the free, ticketed event which includes screenings of Lee Cronin’s ‘Billy and Chuck’ and Peter McDonald’s ‘Pentecost’.

Filmbase will be giving tips on directing and camera as well as a showcase of the latest edition of Apple’s editing software Final Cut Pro on the night, and attendees can get their hands on free copies of Film Ireland magazine.

Other Culture Night film highlights include a selection of films from the earliest surviving Irish fiction films, The O Kalem Collection (1910 – 1915), from 7pm at the IFI, Eustace Street, Temple Bar. The programme includes ‘The Lad From Old Ireland’ (1910) and ‘For Ireland’s Sake’ (1914) with live piano music from Morgan Cooke.

Film screenings are also included in the Culture night line-up at Dublin’s Goethe Institute along with art exhibition, course information, library open, book sale of ex-library stock and second-hand books.
