Irish-German co-production ‘Death of a Superhero’ is to have its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival this September.
Directed by Ian Fitzgibbon (Perrier’s Bounty), the feature was shot on location in Ireland during October 2010.
‘Death of a Superhero’ is based on Anthony McCarten’s novel of the same name which tells the story of terminally ill teenager Donald Clarke, who craves sex and adventure. Realising that time is limited, Donald escapes from the harsh realities of life to his illustrated comic adventures. Anthony McCarten also wrote the screenplay for the feature.
The film’s cast members include Andy Serkis (TinTin, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Thomas Brodie Sangster (Love Actually, Nowhere Boy), Aisling Loftus (Dice), Jessica Schwarz (Perfume, Off Beat), and Irish actor Michael McElhatton (Parked, Happy Ever Afters).
The feature is a co-production between Irish production company Grand Pictures and Germany’s Bavaria Pictures and was produced by Michael Garland, Astrid Kahmke and Philipp Kreuzer. It received support from the Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board, the German Federal Film Board/FFA, the FilmFernsehFonds Bavaria/FFF, Bavaria Banking Fund/BBF and was developed with the support of the MEDIA programme. Bavaria Film International is the sales agent for the feature and distribution deals are TBC.
Other Irish screenings at Toronto include Irish/Canadian co-production ‘The Moth Diaries’ and the world premiere of Dublin based Parallel Films co-production ‘Albert Nobbs’. ‘Death of a Superhero’ is playing as part of the contemporary World Cinema Programme at the Toronto International Film Festival which takes place from September 8th-18th.
