The Guth Gafa Documentary Film Festival has nabbed Irish journo comedian Abie Philbin Bowman to take part in the newly formed Guth Gafa Debate.
Abie Philbin Bowman (Jesus: The Guantanamo Years) will moderate the Guth Gafa debate which will focus on the timely issue of “Terrorism on Trial” on the 13th June. The debate will take place after the screening of four topical movies: ‘The Pipe’ by Risteard O’ Domhnaill; You Don't Like The Truth: 4 Days in Guantanamo’ by Patricio Henriquez and Luc Cóté; ‘Better this World’ by Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane and ‘Wiebo’s War’ by David York. Issues dealt with in these films will be debated between the directors and Abie Philbin Bowman. Topics to be debated include the rights of citizens to use violent resistance against injustice and questions surrounding war and civil disobedience.
Philbin Bowman will also be performing his own comedy show titled ‘Eco-Friendly Jihad’ at the festival on June 11 which gives his take on how the world can be saved through reducing carbon emissions by joining Al Qaeda. "Who else can save the planet from airlines, Western consumerism and overpopulation?" Abie has been touring with the show and has previously gigged in Flat Lake Festival, Brighton Fringe, Hollywood Fringe Festival, Galway Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Other initiatives at the Guth Gafa festival include ‘Turning The Tide – A Day of Films and Talks Inspiring Change’. This initiative will focus on environmental issues and will include screenings of ‘Sun Come Up’ (Jennifer Redfearn), ‘Gasland’ (Josh Fox) and ‘Climate of Change’ (Brian Hill) and panel discussions with former Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan and director of Amnesty Ireland Colm O’Gorman.
