More than 70 Irish companies have registered their attendance with the Irish Film Board’s Irish Pavilion stand for the 2011 Cannes festival which launched today, Wednesday, May 11th. The Irish filmmakers attending include representatives of the 18 Irish projects screening and selling at the event amongst others. Furthermore, the MEDIA stand will again this year be located in the Village Internationale and will run events such as a free European Audiovisual Observatory Workshop.

The Irish Pavilion looks to be the central point for any Irish filmmakers attending the festival. One such event is the annual Culture Ireland and the Irish Film Board Cannes reception which celebrates Irish film talent - this year taking place on Saturday, May 14th. The Irish Pavilion is located in the Village Internationale and will remain open for the duration of the Cannes festival, closing on Friday, May 20th.

The MEDIA Stand will also be located at the European Pavilion in the Village Internationale and will act as an area to meet with MEDIA Desk representatives from around Europe. Eva Ntafitsopoulou, the Development Executive from the Education Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency will be in Cannes from Friday May 13th until Sunday May 15th and will be available to meet with companies regarding Development applications during this time.

MEDIA Desk Ireland will also host a briefing session on the MEDIA Production Guarantee Fund at the Cannes Film Festival. The presentation by Audiovisual SGR will take place at the Irish Pavilion in the Village Internationale on Monday, May 16th from 10am to 11am. MEDIA Desk CEO, Siobhan O’Donoghue will introduce the event for which the guest speakers are Gunnar Magnusson, Project Manager from the European Commission; Carlos Antón, Manager of the MEDIA Production Guarantee Fund with Audiovisual SGR and Mónica Carretero from Audiovisual SGR.

MEDIA will also host an event entitled ‘The European Rendezvous: The Future MEDIA Programme’ on Monday, May 16th where it will invite filmmakers’ input as to the future of the MEDIA funding programme. The group’s free European Audiovisual Observatory Workshop will take place on Sunday, May 15th from 3pm to 5pm. Would be participants are asked to register by emailing cannes@coe.int.

A host of Irish producers, directors, writers along with reps from Irish film festivals, distributors and film agencies will be travelling to Cannes for the market event. These include Samson Films’ David Collins; Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe; SP Films’ Conor Barry and John Kevillle and Subotica’s Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan.
