Each year over fifty thousand young Irish students attend their debs – the formal event that marks the end of their school lives and has evolved enormously since its introduction in the 18th century. Presenter Henry McKean (The Truth about Travellers) fronts TV3’s one hour special, ‘Irish Dream Debs’ where he investigates three different Irish debs experiences.
Throughout the TV3 in-house hour long special, Henry examines the debs nights of Zara Crowley, Faye Rooney from Co. Dublin and African born Rachel Lawal. A release from TV3 states that: ”Debutante ball celebrations date back to the seventeen hundreds. Although the original tradition of young maidens hoping to find a life long partner might be dead and buried the spectacle of dressing up and celebrating is still very much alive in Ireland today.”
The special is directed and produced by Jill Walshe and shot for eight days this autumn starting on August 21st. The production team shot the series in Waterford, Louth, Dublin and Meath.
‘Irish Dream Debs’ will broadcast on TV3 on October 6th 2010 at 9pm.
