Cinemagic Festival Programme Unveiled

Following on from its inaugural festival in 2008, The Coca-Cola Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People will return to Dublin from May 6th – 13th. Young film and TV enthusiasts will have an array of screenings, masterclasses with film and television industry guests, workshops for schools, a cross border jury panel and Q&A’s to chose from.

The festival, which is aimed at young people, will be hosting Masterclasses that will bring a number of well known industry professionals to share their expertise. Classes include; Radio Presenting and Production with Ray D’Arcy from Today FM; Acting with Patrick Bergin (Strength and Honour); Television Presenting with Aidan Power (The Café); Television and music production with Ned O’Hanlon; Script writing with Ben Schiffer (Skins); Production Design and Art Direction with Jason Carlin (School Run); Acting with Rachel Kavanagh (Fair City); Directing for film with Graham Cantwell (Anton); Radio Production with Barbara Loftus (The Last Word with Matt Cooper) and Directing with David Caffrey (Raw).

Gala preview screenings include: ‘Coraline,’ based on Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling book and ‘Jonas Brothers: the 3D Concert Experience’. New and old classics from around the world to screen are; ‘Ratatouille,’ ‘Age of Stupid’ (introduced by ECO UNESCO), ‘Blade Runner: The Final Cut’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘The Orphanage’, ‘Quest for A Heart’, ‘Nocturna’, ‘Grease’, ‘Gnomes and Trolls: The Secret Chamber’, ‘Bicycle Thieves’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘The Princess Bride’, ‘Man on A Wire’, ‘Sword of the Stranger’, ‘Dragon Hunters’ and ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’.

Cinemagic Chief Executive, Joan Burney Keatings said: “We are delighted to be returning to Dublin with another packed programme of film and television events for young people which will entertain and inspire those who participate. W…. The festival will open on 6th May with a preview of ‘Coraline’, an animated fantasy adventure helmed by ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ director Henry Selick, that is guaranteed fun for all the family.”

Cinemagic is also offering an opportunity for young film enthusiasts aged 10-18 years old to participate in the Festival Cross Border Jury Competition and Cinemagic Young Film Critic of the Year Competition. The jury panel will have their say as they judge the best short film for a children’s audience and the best short film for a teenage audience.

Primary school workshops will include; Writing and Design workshop with Don Conroy; a preview screening of ‘Lifeboat Luke’ – followed by a discussion with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution who also present to talk about the charity; Storyboarding with Temple Clark; Let’s Get Animated Claymation workshop; a Q&A with director Tomm Moore after a special screening with Children’s Books Ireland of ‘The Secret of Kells’ and The Art of Shadow Play with Frank Quinn.

The secondary school workshops will include; A behind the scenes look at film promotion and marketing with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Ireland; The paupers guide to science fiction making – with Louis Savy; the workshop - Concept to Screen with Faction Films – looking at how to develop an idea into a detailed storyline; a news journalist workshop with the Independent newspaper group; a 3 day workshop – Screenagers, filmmaking workshop where over this time participants devise, prepare and shoot their own short film; Film Classification workshop with IFCO and In Conversation with actor John Kavanagh (George Gently).

The festival also includes a number of special events including Dare2bdrinkaware, a short film screening from the digital film competition with a difference where 3rd level students examine the relationship between Irish culture and drinking; the Cinemagic Stars Event - a 2 day intensive acting masterclass; cross border film camp and the inaugural Cinemagic Dublin Style Awards where young people aged between 15 and 18 are invited to enter the competition.
