IFI Set David Lean Retrospective

The IFI kicks off a two-part retrospective on the work of Oscar and Golden Globe winning English director David Lean this week, with sixteen of his films set to screen through July and August including ‘Brief Encounter’, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Great Expectations’.

The first part of the programme includes ‘Blithe Spirit’, Lean’s Oscar winning 1945 film. Adapted from a play by Noel Coward, the film sees Charles and his second wife Ruth haunted by the ghost of his first wife. ‘Blithe Spirit’ screens on Thursday July 3rd at 1.15pm and 6.15 pm.

Lean’s Oscar nominated ‘Brief Encounter’, which follows a woman who meets a stranger in a train station and is tempted to cheat on her husband, screens on July 5th and 6th at 1.30pm.

Lean’s H.G. Wells adaptation ‘The Passionate Friends’ screens on July 5th and 6th at 3.00pm. The film follows a middle-class housewife who finds herself torn between her dry financier husband and an attractive former sweetheart.

Charles Dickens adaptation ‘Great Expectations’, screens on July 12th at 1.30pm and 13th at 2.15pm, while ‘Oliver Twist’ screens on July 12th at 5.00pm.

Other films set to screen include Lean’s 1950 drama ‘Madeleine’ on July 19th, his Oscar winning ‘The Sound Barrier’ on July 26th and BAFTA winning film ‘Hobson’s Choice’ on July 27th.
