An all-new version of colorful 70’s kid’s TV series ‘Emu’, filmed entirely in Belfast, will hit our screens this October. The series, set to air on CITV, was filmed over a seven week period with many local cast and crew, including Myles Thompson and Naomi Fearnon from Lurgan and Northern Irish director Des McCarthy.
The 26-episode series, aimed at 6-11 year olds, follows the adventures of the mischievous Emu and best friend Toby. Toby and Emu have moved into a new flat, with a strict ‘no pets allowed’ policy, and the pair and their neighbours must work together to hide the larger-than-life bird from the would-be evictors.
‘Emu’ originally hit our screens in the 70’s, when it reached primetime audiences of over 11 million. The late Rod Hull starred as the bird’s faithful sidekick - his son Toby takes over the role in the new series.
‘Emu’ is produced by Initial, an Endemol company. Executive producer on the show is Christopher Pilkington, whose previous credits include young people’s programmes ‘Totally Frank’ and ‘Miami 7’. Series producer is Candida Julian Jones.
Pilkington says of the pecking puppet’s return: “Having worked with Rod Hull in the past it is a particular thrill and pleasure to be reacquainted with the extraordinary Emu. I am delighted to be working with Toby and bringing ‘Emu’ to a brand new audience.”
The new Emu puppet was created by Neil Sterenberg. Puppeteer on the new series is Simon Buckley.
‘Emu’ begins on CITV on Monday, October 8th.
