The School of Media, DIT in Dublin, has announced details of a PhD research scholarship on 'New Media: Uses, Meanings and Rituals'.
Dr Eddie Brennan, Head of the School, said, "This is a very generous funded scheme covering fees and expenses for three years. It would ideally suit any one who wants to combine practical media industry concerns with academic enquiry."
Understanding New Media: Uses, Meanings and Rituals
This research aims to develop our understanding of how people in Ireland, particularly young people, use new media technologies. While there is an established base of knowledge around traditional audience behaviour, for television for example, we know next to nothing about the uses, meanings and rituals that people in Ireland build up around using the internet, mobile media devices, mobile phones and so on. Whole new sub-cultures have emerged around and within new media. Yet knowledge of these new cultures and practices is limited in academia and industry.
Creating profiles of new media behaviour is an important academic project.
It is also, moreover, an important support to Ireland¹s attempt to develop a strong digital media content industry. Successful media content and applications can only be designed on the basis of a deep understanding of how people use media and what it means to them as part of their everyday life.
The graduate recruited to this project should have previously studied media, business or social science and have a specific interest in new media practices and cultural production.
Supervisors: Dr. Eddie Brennan and Dr. Brian O'Neill
The deadline for applications is Friday 21st September.
