Sofia Coppola’s period drama ‘Marie Antoinette’ will be the closing film at the forthcoming Cork Film Festival (8 – 15 October). Now in its 51st year, the full festival lineup includes a range of Irish and international feature, documentary and short films.
Opening on the 8th of October with Toronto FIPRESCI winner ‘Death of A President’, the 2006 Cork Film Festival offers a week of treats for film fans. ‘Borat: Cultural Learning of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’, which stars ‘Ali G’ comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, will be another controversial pic screened during the fest, with other feature highlights including the Irish Produced ‘Red Road’, Ridley Scott’s ‘A Good Year’, ‘Hollywoodland’ which scooped the Venice Best Actor award for its star Ben Affleck and Rolf de Heer’s ‘Ten Canoes’, winner of the 2005 Cannes Special Jury Prize.
Documentary highlights include Philip Gröning’s Sundance winner ‘Into Great Silence’ and ‘Saint of 9/11’ about Fr. Mychal Lynch, a gay Chaplain to the New York Fire station who came to the attention of the world when he was carried out by a team of rescue workers from the World Trade Centre on September 11.
In addition, the Festival will play host to over 40 Programmes of Shorts, a Drive In Madness sidebar with classic titles ‘Rocky’, ‘The Pink Panther’ and ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and a special Meet the Filmmaker event as well as the usual post screening Q&A’s.
