Cohen and Bono |
The Stranger Than Fiction Documentary Film Festival and Market (28 Sept – 1 Oct) will open with the documentary tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, entitled ‘Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man’.
Directed by Lian Lunson, the film is a tribute concert and biopic combined. The film draws a portrait of the songwriter, poet, and philosopher who has long been out of the public eye.
The film features performances, rare interviews with the musician and testimonials from various artists, including Bono, Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker, who pay tribute to the singer.
Other highlights in the Stranger Than Fiction programme include the controversial rockumentary ‘LoudquietLoud:The Pixies’, which followed the reformed rock band on their tumultuous tour in 2004; the acclaimed documentary of footballing legend Zidane Zidane ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’ and the US political documentary examining campaign marketing tactics ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’.
Among the Irish titles featured in the programme are Keith Walsh and Jill Beardsworth’s ‘Children Of Allah’, journeying through the daily life of an Indian orphanage; the Doubleband documentary biopic of American research psychologist Harry Harlow ‘Monkey Love’ and ‘Connemara Monster’ which looks back to 1969 when the Loch Ness Monster Investigation Bureau arrived at a small lake just outside Clifden in Co. Galway. In addition, sporting legend Jimmy Magee will be in town to introduce the festival’s closing documentary ‘Celtic: The Irish Connection’ – a film charting the bond between Celtic Football Club and the Irish diaspora in western Scotland.
