Veteran Irish actor Peter O’Toole has received a prestigious Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actor (Drama) category for his role in Roger Michell’s ‘Venus’.
In ‘Venus’ 74 year old O’Toole plays an ageing actor whose life is turned upside down after he strikes up an unlikely friendship with a teenage girl.
Announced in LA today, the Globe nominations mark the start of the frenetic Awards season in Hollywood. O’Toole has been nominated for nine Golden Globes in the past, winning four statuettes. He has yet to win a Best Actor Oscar, despite seven nominations.
Also shortlisted in the Best Actor Drama category is Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been nominated twice, for ‘The Departed’ and ‘Blood Diamond’, Will Smith for ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ and Forest Whitaker for ‘The Last King of Scotland’.
Another double nominee, Clint Eastwood, has been shortlisted for ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ and its Japanese companion piece ‘Letters From Iwo Jima’ for Best Director. Stephen Frears (The Queen), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel) and Martin Scorcese (The Departed) also received the Best Director nod.
Leading the film nominations is Gonzalez Inarritu’s ‘Babel’ with seven including Best Drama, Best Supporting Actress Adriana Barraza & Rinko Kikuchi, Best Actor – Brad Pitt and Best Screenplay. Scorcese’s ‘The Departed’ follows with a total of six nominations and hotly tipped musical ‘Dreamgirls’ garnered five.
In the top television category US series ‘24’, ‘Big Love’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Lost’ will battle for the Best Drama award.
The winners of the Golden Globe awards are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press. The awards will be presented Jan. 15
