Filmmaker Thierry de Mey has been selected to feature in this years International Dance Festival Ireland taking place in various Dublin locations from May 4th – 23rd.
de May’s films focus primarily on dance, through visual artistry and composition he creates a unique realm where the art of dance can be witnessed and enjoyed. He has had a long term collaboration with choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and her dance company Rosas, who feature in many of his producitons. Obviously, with a background as a composer, de Mey’s work explores the complex and difficult relationship between music and film. But the films also examine different approaches to narrative (or lack of it), a new concept of silent film (although he has also used language), as well as a profound understanding of production design, sound design and editing.
This year at the festival there will be the World Premiere screening of de May’s latest movie ‘Counterphrases’ at the IFI on the 14th of May. The movie is highly anticipated and features some of the world’s leading contemporary music composers including Steve Reich, Magnus Lindberg and Stefan van Eycken.
In addition, there is a scheduled screenings of of de Mey’s dance films including Musique de Tables, Love Sonnets, 21 Etudes de Danser. the movies will be introduced by the filmmaker followed by a Q&A.
