The Writers’ Society, NUI,G play host to an eclectic panel of Irish Film-Makers on Thursday the 19th of February at 7pm in the Siobhan Mc Kenna Theatre, NUI,G as part of the Muscailt Arts Festival.
Gerry Stembridge, Liz Gill, Ronan Gallagher, Rod Stoneman and Lelia Doolin take part in a panel discussion on screenwriting and filmmaking in Ireland where audience intervention is encouraged. Admission is free.
Gerry Stembridge has written and directed, About Adam, starring Stuart Townsend and Kate Hudson, Guiltrip and Black Day at Black Rock. He has co-written Nora starring Ewan Mc Gregor, and Ordinary Decent Criminal starring Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino and Colin Farrell. He has written and directed plays for The Abbey Theatre, notably The Gay Detective and That Was Then.
Ronan Gallagher's Underworld took 2nd place at the Galway Film Festival in the Best First Film category and received a nationwide theatrical release. He co-wrote When the Sky Falls based on the life of Journalist Veronica Guerin, starring Joan Allen.
Lelia Doolin, writer, radio personality and former Director for The Abbey Theatre and Chair of the Irish Film Board will chair the discussion.
Liz Gill made her directing debut in 1996 with Gold in the Streets. She began in the film business as an assistant to Martin Scorsese and worked her way up to First Assistant Director for directors such as Barry Levinson, Todd Haynes and Kevin Reynolds. Between films, Liz wrote and directed a short film A Kiss of Death, an Off-Off Broadway play, and several screenplays. She is currently writing a screenplay called April Fools. Her latest picture Goldfish Memory won the Audience Award at OUTFEST in LA. Starring Fiona O Shaughnessy, Jean Butler and Flora Montgomery, it shows the light-hearted side of dating in contemporary Dublin
Rod Stoneman is the current Director of the Huston School of Film and Digital Media at National University of Ireland, Galway. He has worked as Deputy Commissioning Editor in Independent Film and Video at Channel Four Television in London, and was Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Film Board from 1993-2003. He has made a number of documentaries and written on film and television in Screen, Sight and Sound, Kinema and Film Ireland. He has published and lectured widely on film in Ireland and abroad. He has produced Circle of Friends, Agnes Browne, Bloody Sunday and Intermission amongst other films.
