New Training Courses For Autumn

Both the Galway Film Centre and FAS Screen Training Ireland have announced details of their film and television training courses planned for the Autumn season.

The Galway Film Centre kicks off its October schedule with a Seven-weekend Film Foundation Course beginning the 2nd October and running until the 21st of November.

This introductory course is aimed at people who have an interest in film and would like to gain practical hands-on experience of the film making process. The course will cover the following areas: film history, scriptwriting, production, direction, camera, lighting, sound and editing. € 610 unwaged/ € 670 waged

In addition, the following courses will also be running at the centre;

Evening Course in Film Appreciation 6th of Oct to 3rd of Nov
The structure of the course will be to look at contemporary films to see how they have taken their influences from older classical films. The evenings will be informative and enjoyable for those with an interest in learning more about the narrative and history of film. € 75.

Introductory Evening Course in Scriptwriting 5th of Oct to 23rd of Nov
The course is aimed at people with an interest in writing a short script. No previous experience is necessary. The course will work with brainstorming ideas, character and dialogue development and the layout of the script. € 155 waged and € 130 unwaged

Introduction to Mini Digital Video Camera Course – 9th & 10th of October
This one weekend introductory course is for individuals who intend to shoot drama/documentary programmes on MINI-DV Camera Equipment (Canon XM-1). The course will explore TV terminology, composition techniques, lighting principles, shoot-to-edit and professional sound acquisition techniques on a Canon XM-1 the compact version of the XL1. € 180 unwaged/€ 220 waged

FAS Screen Training Ireland have announced details of three new courses; the Genre Screenwriting – Thriller Course, the Strategic Planning Workshop and the Directors Masterclass with Mark Achbar As part of the Stranger than Fiction Documentary Festival and Market.

Genre Screenwriting – Thriller Friday 29th October 2004
This course is for Irish professionals involved in writing, producing, directing and development in the film industry. Participants should be involved in current development projects. The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to genre theory and to explore the conventions of the Thriller genre. It will address the role of genre in developing story, and understanding and responding to audience expectations. This understanding is crucial to the development of coherent and successful scripts.

Nic Ransome will tutor the course, Nick is a screenwriter and script consultant. He has an MA in Film and Television Writing from the University of Sheffield, where he studied under Andrew Davies and Jack Rosenthal. He designs and delivers courses on Horror, Sci-Fi and Thrillers in The Script Factory, and is Deputy Editor of Scriptwriter Magazine. Strategic Planning Workshop 19th & 20th October 2004
The strategic planning workshop is devised for experienced owner/managers and key personnel working in film, television production, animation and post-production companies.

Two people, at least, per company must apply to ensure maximum benefit is derived from the workshop. The workshop is designed to enhance business expertise in the key area of strategic planning and develop a long-term plan for the development of your business in the marketplace. You will be required to produce a strategic plan for your company during the workshop.

Linda Beath from Ideal Filmworks Italia will tutor the course. Ideal Filmworks was established in Canada by Linda Beath ten years ago to raise development and production financing for international co-productions of high quality feature films and television programmes. It was incorporated in Italy in 2000 adding business and strategic planning to its core business of entertainment industry financing. Linda Beath teaches Business Planning and Strategic Planning at several of the workshops and Masters programmes supported by Media Plus and Eureka.

Directors Masterclass with Mark Achbar as part of the Stranger than Fiction Documentary Festival and Market - 30th September 2003
Participants in this course should have experience in documentary is necessary whether as directors or in related roles. The Workshop will start with a screening of The Corporation in the morning.

In the afternoon Mr Achbar will examine political documentary film making, exploring issues such as nuclear power, poverty, media control, East Timor, human rights, U.S. hegemony and corporate power. Then Masterclass will then focus on The Corporation - its inception, funding, production and distribution.

Mark Achbar is best known for Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, which he co-directed and co-produced with Peter Wintonick. The film was honoured with 22 awards and distinctions, screened theatrically in 300 cities and aired on 30 national TV networks. Until now, the 2 hour-45 minute epic held the record as Canada's all-time, top-grossing feature documentary. The Corporation now holds that distinction.
