The Department of Journalism in Coláiste Dhúlaigh presents a National Seminar on Film Making in Ireland on Saturday 25th November 2000
BAFTA Award winning director (“East is East” 1999), Damien O’Donnell and award winning documentary film director (“Southpaw: The Francis Barrett Story” 1999), Liam McGrath, will make keynote presentations. Both Damien and Liam are graduates of Media Production in Coláiste Dhúlaigh. The rest of the programme will consist of workshops conducted by industry specialists including award winning journalist and screenwriter (“Night Train” 1999), Aodhan Madden.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Film in Ireland will be of immediate relevance to both experienced and aspiring film makers. The seminar will also be of interest to educators working in schools and colleges, writers groups, film societies, theatre groups, media policy makers, and students on courses such as Media Production, Film Production, Animation, Communication and Multimedia and students in school who are thinking about a career in Film, Journalism or Media.
SEMINAR PANELLISTS
Film in Ireland will be presented by six professionals who will bring to the seminar the knowledge, ideas, experience and expertise that they have gathered during their careers. The panellist have developed a body of work and experience which they will share with the seminar delegates in a workshop setting that will include presentations, screenings and discussion.
DAMIEN O'DONNELL
Writer/Director
Damien O'Donnell is BAFTA award-winning director of hit movie "East is East". Damien is also a recipient of the BBC Talent Film Award in 1998. Damien also wrote and directed "35 Aside" a multi award-winning short. Damien is a graduate of Coláiste Dhúlaigh and DIT.
LIAM McGRATH
Director
Liam McGrath's directories debut was "Boys for Rent" an award winning documentary dealing with the experiences of male prostitutes in Dublin. His other films include "Male Rape", "Ahead of the Class", and "Home", a six part series for RTE. Liam directed "Southpaw: The Francis Barrett Story" and he is currently in pre-production for a documentary film based on Paolo Coelo's book "The Pilgrimage". Liam is a graduate of Coláiste Dhúlaigh and DLCAD.
FRANK BERRY
Writer/Director
Frank berry is a Dublin based young film director who has just completed the shooting of his first digital feature film "This Time Round". He has directed three short films "Fanatic" (1997), "Boat Racing (1999) and the "Black Suit" (2000), all of which have been screened at film festivals around Europe. Franks is graduate of Coláiste Dhúlaigh. He also has post graduate diploma in Film Production from DIT. He teaches Multimedia and Television Production in Coláiste Dhúlaigh.
AODHAN MADDEN
Playwright, Screenwriter And Journalist
Aodhan Madden is an award-winning playwright, fiction writer and journalist. Four of his plays have been staged by the Abbey and several others have been broadcast on RTE and BBC. Aodhan wrote the screenplay for "Night Train" (1999) and his new film "Skerries" will be shot in April. Aodhan teaches Journalism and and is writer in residence in Coláiste Dhúlaigh.
ROBERT J QUINN
Screenwriter
Robert J Quinn has written for both film and television. Film credits include "A Basket Full of Wallpaper" (commissioned by RTE and the Irish Film Board - 1997) and the "Black Suit" (1999). Television commissions include "The Rogers and Roe Show" (a half hour football pilot - 1997). Robert has a BA in Drama Studies from TCD and an MA in Film Studies from UCD. Robert teaches Film Studies and Script-writing in Coláiste Dhúlaigh.
KEITH FORAN
Animator, Producer and Director
Keith Foran is an award-winning director and producer. "Peig Sayers" (1995), an animated series for RTE and a short film "An Evil Cradling" based on the book of the same name by Brian Keenan are among his many film and Television successes. After graduating in classical animation at BCFE, Keith worked with Don Bluth studios and king Rollo Films. He is currently Animation Director with Coco Television. Keith teaches animation at DLCAD and Coláiste Dhúlaigh.
JIM MARTIN
Seminar Director
Jim Martin has twenty six years experience in Television and Education. He led the growth of Communication and Media Production before developing Multimedia, Community Media, Journalism and Film Production courses in Coláiste Dhúlaigh. Previous posts also include Head of the School of Communication in Coláiste Dhúlaigh. Currently, Jim Martin is an Assistant Principal with responsibility for Coláiste Dhúlaigh's Marketing and Publicity. On the Television Production side, Jim has produced or directed programmes for education, business and industry. He founded the campus company, Coláiste Dhúlaigh Communications, in the early eighties and pioneered a "hands on" approach to teaching media.
