WFTV Summit in London

At the annual International Summit of Women in Film and Television, to be held in London from 11th to 14th October, the Irish Chapter is hosting an event on National Identity at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square.

The seminar will be chaired by Rynagh O’Grady, board member of WFTV Ireland, award winning documentary maker and actress, ‘Night Train’, ‘A Love Divided’ and ‘Father Ted’. The discussion will be ‘How Ireland and the Irish are Represented on Screen’.

Speakers include, producer and director, Mary Raftery whose award winning documentary ‘States of Fear’ provoked an apology from the Irish government to those who were abused as children in Ireland’s Industrial Schools. Lance Pettitt, senior lecturer in Irish Studies at St Mary’s College London, co director of The Centre for Irish Studies and author of ‘Screening Ireland’. Emer McCourt is an actress and producer, she produced the acclaimed feature ‘Human Traffic’ and appeared in Ken Loache’s ‘Riff Raff’.

Guests invited to the Irish event include Dervla Kirwan , Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn, Stephen Frears, (Dangerous Liasons, Hi Fidelity, The Snapper) and Father Ted writers Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan.

The seminar on National Identity will be followed by a reception at The Irish Embassy hosted by The Irish Ambassador, Edward Barrington.

Women in Film and Television has chapters in 14 countries and will welcome people from as far afield as China, Zimbabwe and Los Angeles.

Over 150 delegates, from 42 chapters, including Ireland will attend the summit.

Janet Anderson the Minister for Film, Tourism and Broadcasting will host a Gala Reception at the Houses of Parliament to open the summit.

There will be industry sessions on subjects ranging from the phenomenon of Reality TV to the problems of why so many feature films never see the light of day, Marjorie Scardino, CEO for Pearsons PLC and one of the most respected women within the industry will make a keynote speech and there will also be a number of international sessions held at Canada House, Trafalgar square.
