FÁS Screen Training Ireland have announced details of four new courses and workshops for the coming months; Director of Photography Workshop, Managing TV development, Creative Thinking Techniques and Essential Bookkeeping.
The Director of Photography Workshop is scheduled to take place from the 28th of November to the 16th of December 2005 in Ardmore Studios.
The course is aimed at experienced focus-pullers and camera operators as well as emerging DOP’s. Participants must have a minimum of 5 years experience at a senior level in the industry and be able to operate 35mm film and HD cameras.
This course will be tutored by IFTA nominated DOP Peter Robertson whose credits include ‘Bagwoman’, ‘Song For a Raggy Boy’ and ‘Inside I’m Dancing’. Robertson will focus on and enhance participants knowledge of:
- lighting for film and HD
- role and responsibilities of the DoP as head of the Camera Dept
- relationships between the DoP and Director, Producer and Art, Hair and Makeup and Locations departments..
- different lighting fixtures and their value in a range of different scenarios
- the use of all types of both camera and lighting filters
- the range of film stocks and their capability, as well as HD and a comparison between Film and HD on 35mm
- Location Recces
- how to evaluate both rush and answer prints and know the range of post production procedures available to manipulate the negative/print
- the manipulation of the negative through an electronic process
- the development of visual effects photography
- motion control systems
- in-camera effects

The Creative Thinking Techniques Workshop will take place on the 25th of October 2005. This one day programme is aimed at film and television industry practitioners who wish to hone their creative thinking techniques.
The course is tutored by Pam Relton, a multi-skilled broadcaster/trainer with over 20 years’ experience in both television and radio. Working mostly for the BBC, Pam has researched a wide range of output including documentaries, features and consumer programmes, and also worked as a broadcast journalist for news/current affairs. Relton will help participants hone their creative thinking techniques dealing with:
- Creative thinking techniques.
- Ideas generation.
- Six thinking hats
- The Disney Strategy

The course in Managing the Television Development Process within your Company takes place on the 18th November 2005. The course designer is Midas Productions’ Billy McGrath and key topics addressed in the course will include:
- Development as the most vital resource of your company
- Understanding that a ‘concept’ is just that – how does it grow to a TV project
- Tapping imagination and creative professionals to develop commercial projects
- Understanding the ‘right idea at the right time’ wins hands down
- Knowing when certain genres are hot and cold for broadcasters
- The importance of ‘exclusivity’ on access to talent or the subject matter
- Scheduling - focussing particularly on scheduling development during production
- Accessing talent both on and off screen
- Growing your non staff development ‘army’
- MD as a brave ‘editor’ – keeping the slate fresh and spread across as many genres, broadcasters, territories as you can
- Building good ideas into great programming – thinking time the only resource
- Recognising that the best pitches are short and to the point

Finally, the Essential Book-keeping Workshop takes place in Dublin on the 11th of October 2005. This workshop is devised for emerging producers, sole traders and small production companies. The aim of the workshop is to enable participants to establish, understand and maintain a basic book-keeping system thereby ensuring good company financial management. Areas covered will include:
- Accounting for VAT
- Director obligations/ company returns
- Basic book-keeping and software options available
- Banking and bank reconciliation
- Petty cash
- Creating management information
- Reporting requirements
Tutors on this course are Hell’s Kitchens’ Sue Henderson, a qualified accountant who has completed post-production accounts on many of Hell’s Kitchen’s productions as well as managing their company accounts. Henderson will be joined by Billi Webster who has been working as an assistant accountant in the film industry for 9 years. She has worked on such feature films as ‘In America’, ‘Breakfast on Pluto’, ‘Bloody Sunday’ and ‘The Mighty Celt’.
