The Irish Film Institute, in association with University College Cork and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, have announced two days of events to commemorate the centenary of the birth of screen legend Greta Garbo.

The celebration begins on the 16th of September with a screening of the 1926 erotic melodrama ‘Flesh and the Devil’. Other screenings include a restored print of ‘Queen Christina’ (1933), Garbo’s first comedy feature ‘Ninotchka’(1939) and a special event with filmmaker Kevin Brownlow who will introduce a screening of his documentary, ‘Garbo’, followed by discussion.
Panel discussions and speakers at the two day celebration includes Garbo: The Evolution of an Image with Elaine Lennon (DIT) and French scholar Yiannakis D. Ioannides; Acting, body and voice with Aoife Healy (University College Cork) and Donna
Kornhaber (Columbia University, New York) and the Keynote address from Lucy Fischer (University of Pittsburgh) author of‘Material Girl: Greta Garbo as reluctant fashion plate.’
