New Screen Training Ireland Workshops Announced

FÁS Screen Training Ireland have announced new additions to the training/workshop programme for the coming months including a Practical Script Development for Producers workshop, a Non-Linear Narrative course and a Time and People Management Skills Workshop.

Practical Script Development for Producers - 6th – 8th May 2005

This course is aimed at Irish professionals involved in producing in the film and television industry who wish to enhance their practical script development skills.

This course specifically explores the producer’s role in the development process. It consists of two strands: good business practice in script development, and applied script analysis and doctoring. Participants come to the class having viewed certain films to which they apply practical script analysis techniques. Participants utilise practical script doctoring strategies such as "the genre equation" and “narrative sentences” for working out what is and isn't working in any given script. Participants will be given exercises in which they diagnose problems in films applying the techniques they have learnt, and suggest how these problems might be fixed.

The course covers such areas as:
• strategies to focus development
• strategies for script doctoring under pressure
• choosing the right script
• good business practice in script development
• when and when not to delegate
• best use of writers and editors.

Linda Aronson will tutor the course. Linda has won awards as scriptwriter, playwright and novelist and teaches and consults on screenwriting internationally. Her book, ‘Screenwriting Updated’, is now widely used by professionals and students all over the world, being required reading at the prestigious Tisch Film and TV school at NYU and many other international institutions. Linda has taught screenwriting and script analysis for leading film schools and industry organisations in the US, UK, France, Czech Republic, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Linda is a working writer.

Non-Linear Narrative - 11th – 13th May 2005

This course is aimed at Irish professionals involved in writing and development in the film industry. Participants should be involved in current development projects.

This course explores four different categories of non-linear films - Flashback, Tandem, Sequential and Multiple Protagonist - and how each form relies on splitting up, multiplying or truncating the basic three act structure of traditional screenwriting - all according to predictable patterns.

Topics covered include:
• how successful flashback narratives are divided into three major categories, which are all constructed as concentric circles starting at predetermined places in the structure, and can be methodically planned
• how stories-in-sequence models (like Pulp Fiction) can be held together by a 'portmanteau structure' which permits a number of stories to piggyback on the structural build of one story
• ‘stealing jeopardy’ and ‘the death of the second act’: how non-linear structures are often the best way to tell stories that defy conventional structure
• how tandem narrative (equal stories running simultaneously, as in Traffic) is held together by a range of cross-connecting devices
• how multiple protagonist stories (The Big Chill, Tea with Mussolini, etc ) are held together by one macro plot plus a complex but plannable interweaving of many character and plot strands.

Linda Aronson will also tutor this course (see above)
