She leaves her dull supermarket job, and, driven by her passion for embroidery, seeks out the revered Madame Mélikian, an embroiderer for haute couture designer Christian Lacroix. Madame Mélikian, an Armenian exile whose son has recently been killed in a motorcycle accident, is initially reluctant to take Claire on.

But day by day, stitch by stitch, working together on an exquisitely intricate piece of embroidery, a strong bond grows up between the two women, and out of this friendship springs renewed hope in the future.

The Consequences of Love

The ice-cool class of Paolo Sorrentino's second feature makes for one of the most striking thrillers of the year. In a Swiss lakeside hotel, a middle-aged Italian Titta Di Girolamo has been a permanent resident for eight years. He seems to be a man without identity and with little to do, spending his time smoking and coldly observing the hotel's denizens, mostly the beautiful barmaid Sofia. But what is the story of the mysterious suitcases delivered to his door?

Dir : Paolo Sorrentino l Italy l 2004 l 100 mins

In My Father's Den

Beautifully photographed and breathtaking thriller, about a war correspondent who returns to his home village in New Zealand to bury his father. Unwillingly he becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding a missing girl and other long-hidden family secrets.

Dir: Brad McGann l New Zealand - UK l 2004 l 126 mins

Wild Side

Three social outcasts find support through each other in unusual ways, in Wild Side (the title refers to Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed). When Stéphanie meets the Russian deserter and illegal immigrant Michael, a three-cornered relationship ensues.

Dir : Sébastien Lifshitz l France l 2004 l 94 mins

Private

This feature début by documentary film maker Saverio Costanzo is a minimalist psychological drama, inspired by a real event. Costanzo's film is the story of an English professor in Palestine whose family is literally caught in the crossfire between a Palestinian village and an Israeli base when the military occupy their home.Private won the Golden Leopard, the top award at the 2004 Locarno Film Festival.

Dir :Saverio Costanzo l Italy l 2004 l 90 minutes

Strings

A virtuoso feat of puppeteering, this amazing film combines the dark elegance of Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay, with the epic scope and irony-free solemnity of the Lord of the Rings, with ancient legends, tales of forgotten battles, medieval kingdoms, and demonic villains—all unfolding in a tale of regal intrigue that proceeds with the cruel inevitability of a Shakespeare history. Voiced by an excellent British cast, Strings offers a dramatic tale of adventure, bondage and liberation; of love and war, destiny and vitality, identity and common humanity.

Dir: Anders Rønnow-Klarlund l Denmark-UK-Sweden-Norway l 2004 l 89 mins

20:30:40

Sylvia Chang continues to push the borders of women's film with a snapshot tapestry of three women's lives at the ages of 20, 30 and 40. Engaging performances from Angelica Lee, Rene Liu and Sylvia Chang move 20 30 40 away from a simple concept as the women seek meaning and identity through their relationships, sometimes straining against and sometimes falling into the stereotypes of Taiwanese society.

Dir : Sylvia Chang l Hong Kong l 2004 l 110 mins

Torremolinos '73

Torremolinos '73 is a pleasing, subdued take on one couple’s short-lived flirtation with the 70’s porn industry toward the end of the Franco regime, when cinema sex in Spain was still a cardinal sin. The lives of Alfredo, an encyclopaedia salesman and his wife Carmen are forever changed when Alfredo’s boss offers them a proposal they can’t refuse. Down on his luck due to slow business, the boss asks the homely couple to make super 8 adult home videos to sell in the Scandinavian black market.

Dir: Pablo Berger l Spain l 2003 l 93 minutes

Festival Express

In the summer of 1970, a series of music festivals were held across Canada. After the first concert in Toronto, the musicians, roadies and a film crew boarded a private train to travel to the remaining events in Winnipeg and Calgary. Musicians included The Band, The Grateful Dead, and Janis Joplin. Bob Smeaton's film documents this now legendary tour.

Dir : Bob Smeaton l Canada l 2003 l 90 mins

Yasmin

The young, free-spirited Yasmin lives in the North of England. She has to find the balance between her traditional Pakistani family and her need to enjoy the freedom of Western society. After the shocking events of September 11, her life and that of her family come under increasing pressure.

Dir : Kenny Glenaan l UK l 2004 l 87 mins

Kontroll

The massive labyrinthine netherworld that is the Budapest subway system provides the stunning setting for Kontroll, a high-style, high-speed romantic thriller in which the lives of assorted outcasts, lovers, and dreamers intersect and collide. And where one handsome young hero, one mysterious maiden, and one particularly nasty killer must conduct a race against time, trains, and destiny itself in their frantic pursuit of one another.

Dir: Nimrod Antal l Hungary l 2004 l 105 mins

Facing Windows

A rich, occasionally overwrought melodrama about the memory of lost love, Facing Windows explores the power of looking, the gaze of desire. The eyes are indeed windows to the soul -- and more. The film parallels two stories in Rome from different eras. One is set in 1943, when the Nazis rounded up residents of the Jewish Quarter; the other is contemporary, taking place in the newer suburbs. Ozpetek sometimes links the periods with a pan in a single shot, and intentionally highlights the symmetry between two couples, one from each period.

Dir : Ferzan Ozpetek lItaly-Turkey-UK-Portugal l 2003 l 106mins
