Irish Producer Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly’s debut feature ‘Lady MacBeth’ set for Toronto
31 Aug 2016 : Katie McNeice
The Oscar-nominated producer of Sixty Six Pictures shares her feature project debut with Director William Oldroyd and Writer Alice Birch.

The period drama starring Florence Pugh (The Falling) is adapted from Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 Russian novella ‘Lady Macbeth Of The Mtsensk District’.

Christopher Fairbank (Guardians of the Galaxy), Cosmo Jarvis (The Naughty Room) and Bill Fellows (Wuthering Heights) also star.

The story sees a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage in the rural England of 1865. She is an atypical female protagonist for the period however, and does not accept her fate in silence.

The team behind the project have been commended for crafting such an empowered leading female character, most particularly Birch in her adaptation of the text. The project was supported through the iFeatures scheme backed by Creative England, BBC Films, BFI and Creative Skillset.

‘Lady MacBeth’ premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the 2016 Platform programme. Cronin O’Reilly earned her Oscar nomination in 2012 for short film ‘Head Over Heels’, written and directed by Timothy Reckart.
