The inaugural UCD Imagine Science Film Festival will get underway tonight (July 5) with the Irish premiere of writer/director team Rodrigo Sopena and Luis Piedrahita’s thriller ‘Fermat’s Room’.
Sopena and Piedrahita will both attend tonight’s event at 6.30pm in The Light House cinema in Dublin where they will also take part in a panel discussion with esteemed Mathematician Prof Cedric Villani and Margaret E Ward.
Held in collaboration with New York’s Imagine Science Film Festival, UCD Imagine Science Film Festival will take place in various venues across Dublin until July 14 and will host a number of filmmakers, celebrated scientists and critical thinkers, and aims to give the public an exciting way to access scientific issues through a line-up of films, shorts, animations and discussions.
The festival will feature over 86 short films, spanning 17 countries. Among the key events is a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Film & Video’ with Oscar-winner Anil Kokaram, BAFTA Award-winning producer and director Mark Jacobs (Jesse’s Story) and Simon Robinson, founder and chief scientist of visual effects house The Foundry. That discussion will take place at the Science Gallery on July 13.
Other highlights include the European premiere of French director Yann Arthus –Bertrand’s ‘Planet Ocean’ on July 14 as well as the Irish premiere of actor Jeff Goldblum’s ‘The Race for the Double Helix’, which will also feature a discussion with American molecular biologist, geneticist, zoologist and Nobel Prize winner James Watson; and the Irish premiere of ‘The Creator’, a film by Al Holmes and Al Taylor on visionary scientist Alan Turing.
