The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in California has extended 178 invitations to international film industry artists. Cartoon Saloon’s Tomm Moore and Dublin born Editor Naomi Geraghty have both been invited to join the prestigious Academy.
Tomm Moore previous credits include writer and director of Oscar nominated ‘The Secret of Kells.’ He is currently working as director on Cartoon Saloon’s current feature production ‘Song of the Sea’ which he co-wrote with Will Collins (My Brothers). ‘Song of the Sea’ tells the story of the last Seal Child’s journey home. The UK and Irish theatrical distribution rights for ‘Song of the Sea’ have already been nabbed by Optimum Releasing. Dublin born Editor Naomi Geraghty was also invited to join the Academy’s Roster of Members. Naomi worked as editor on features such as ‘Limitless’, ‘The Illusionist’ and ‘Hotel Rwanda.’
Academy President Tom Sherak praised the talent of the invited members saying “These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today. Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks.”
The Academy’s current membership sits at just under 6000 as it has done since 2003. Up to 211 new members could have been admitted this year under Academy Policy but several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Members of the Academy vote annually to select nominees and winners of the Annual Academy Awards (The Oscars).
