Storyland Semi-Final Voting Now Open
28 Apr 2011 :
Rent a Friend
The latest episodes from the four RTÉ Storyland semi-finalists have been uploaded on the Storyland site and online voting for the projects has commenced. Votes will be tallied for the four remaining projects, ‘Rent a Friend’; ‘Lucky Run’; ‘The Outlaw Concy Ryan’ and ‘The Last Security Man’ until Tuesday, May 2nd where the compeition’s finalists will be announced.

Now in its third year Storyland is an online drama competition which offers new talent the opportunity to develop a drama series online. Over the last two months eight shortlisted dramas have battled it out episode-by-episode with the public voting for which dramas they want to be given the opportunity to make subsequent episodes.

This year’s semi-finalists include Dave Minogue and Der Tobin's ‘Rent a Friend’, a comedy drama where Dave and Der – two guys who are out of college and out of work - decide to sell the only asset they have: their friendship. The third instalment of the Kilkenny based comedy sees Der and Dave's friendship going from BFF to BAA as they both pursue the same dream girl. The second of the projects shortlisted includes Liam Hourican, David Stone and David Crann’s ‘The Last Security Man’, a dark comedy about the unlikely friendship between a college drop-out and a psychotic Belgian security guard. Episode three sees Gemma Doorly (Fair City) and Enda Oates joining the cast as they navigate the unhinged world of Dirk de Smet.

The semi finalist list also includes Colm Cafferkey’s ‘Lucky Run’, a drama set in a small town in the West of Ireland where lead character Robbie has 48 hours to repay a finger-chopping gangster €5000 and prevent his train-wreck of a life from steamrolling into the fireworks factory. This week Robbie and Beans discover their cargo is less than recreational, while Billy's attempt to comfort Tina takes an unexpected turn. Finally, Ivan McMahon’s ‘The Outlaw Concy Ryan’ is a Limerick-based mockumentary that follows proud Moyhill native Concy Ryan as he struggles to preserve his way of life in the face of a new government initiative to regenerate the area. Things go from bad to explosive in this installment for Concy Ryan when his beloved horse Geronimo is impounded.

The online voting facility has now commenced for the second-last stage of the competition with the deadline for this round set at 2pm on Tuesday, May 3rd. Three dramas will make it through to the final with this year’s winner announced on Wednesday, June 1st.

All four dramas are available to view on www.rte.ie/storyland
