Irish Wins at Chicago’s Hugo Television Awards
20 Apr 2011 :
An tÁdh
Sixteen South series, 'Sesame Tree' and 'Big City Park' nabbed both the gold and silver plaques respectively at the 47th Hugo Television Awards in Chicago in the Childrens' Series category. Other winners on the night included Síol Scéal Teo's short drama, ‘An tÁdh’, which won the Gold Plaque in the Dramatic Production section whilst Irish BAFTA winning director, Neasa Hardiman saw her award-winning series, 'Tracy Beaker Returns' take the Certificate of Merit in the Children's Programme section.

Sixteen South TV enjoyed a double victory in the Childrens Series group when the second series of 'Sesame Tree' took the Gold Plaque and 'Big City Park' scooped the Silver plaque in the same competitive group. Both series are produced by Sixteen South's Colin Williams; 'Sesame Tree' is an educational puppet series produced with the makers of 'Sesame Street' whilst 'Big City Park' is a pre-school co-production with BBC Scotland.

Taking the Gold Plaque in the competition's Dramatic Production group, Síol Scéal Teo's 'An t'Ádh' is based on the short story of the same name by Padraic Ó Conaire. The short drama tells the story of how one seemingly ordinary day forever changes the fortunes of three young boys in a Connemara coastal community. Produced by Síol Scéal Teoand made as part of the TG4/BAI Údar scheme, the film was written by Medb Johnstone and directed by Colm Bairéad (Mac an Athar). IFTA-nominated DOP Fergal O'Hanlon (Anton) lensed the project, and it was edited by John Paul Shortt (Finscéal Pháidí). The film was broadcast as part of the Údar series on TG4 in January of this year.

Neasa Hardiman's BAFTA winning BBC young peoples' drama series, 'Tracy Beaker Returns' took a certificate of merit on the night. The drama tells the story of a young boy who blames himself for the death of his parents and Neasa tells IFTN she is thrilled at the nod, saying: "I'm thrilled the drama has been honoured among such high quality competition from all over the world. We're telling a challenging story with darkness and emotional truth - I'm delighted that the judges responded to it."

The Hugo Television Awards, which were held on 14th April, look to honour the most innovative and outstanding members of the television community. This year marked the 46th instalment of the gala awards ceremony. For a full list of winners see www.cinemachicago.org
