Poland Festival Fetes New Irish Cinema
06 Apr 2011 :
Sensation
Poland’s Off Plus Camera International Festival of Independent Cinema will introduce a new section at this year’s event entitled New Irish Cinema. The titles selected to be shown include Conor Horgan’s ‘One Hundred Mornings’; Paul Fraser’s ‘My Brothers’ and Carmel Winter’s ‘Snap’. Furthermore, Tom Hall’s ‘Sensation’ will screen as part of the Festival’s Make Way line-up.

The New Irish Cinema section will screen features made by young Irish filmmakers, who have already enjoyed success at European film festivals. Six Irish films have been selected for the new programme, which will take place during the Krakow festival which runs from 8 – 17 April. The full list of Irish titles lined up to show includes ‘One Hundred Mornings’; ‘Wake Wood’; ‘My Brothers’; ‘Savage’; ‘Snap’ and ‘Charlie Casanova’.

Conor Horgan's apocalyptic ‘One Hundred Mornings’ has just completed a week long release in New York. The feature premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2010 and has since gone on to screen at many international film festivals, including Thessaloniki, Rev Fest in Perth, Dublin and Rhode Island. David Keating’s horror, ‘Wake Wood’ stars Aidan Gillen (The Wire, Love/Hate), Eva Birthistle (The Daisy Chain, Breakfast on Pluto) and Timothy Spall (The King's Speech, Harry Potter) recently went on release in Irish and UK cinemas and was well received by critics.

Carmel Winter's directorial debut, ‘Snap’ is a gripping psychological drama invited to screen last year internationally at the Karlovy Vary and Tribeca film festivals. The feature also nabbed the Best Irish Film award at the Dublin Film Critic's Circle earlier this year and saw IFTA nominations for supporting actress Eileen Walsh (The Magdalene Sisters). Terry McMahon's ‘Charlie Casanova’ recently had its world premiere at the SXSW Festival and was further selected for the ÉCU European Independent Film Festival which took place in Paris last week.

The final two titles being honoured by the New Irish Cinema section include Paul Fraser's directorial debut ‘My Brothers’, an off-beat comedy written by IFTA nominated screenwriter Will Collins which was officially selected to screen at the Tribeca film festival and opened the 2010 Galway Film Fleadh. Finally, Brendan Muldowney's gritty feature, ‘Savage’ has been selected for a host of international festivals such as Moscow, Finland and Sweden and claimed several IFTA nominations including nods for lead actors Darren Healy and Nora Jane Noone (The Magdalene Sisters) as well as director of photography Tom Comerford (Moore Street Masala).

The festival’s Make Way section will see 12 films compete for an awarded to be presented by the section’s jury, headed up by ‘Essential Killing’ director Jerzy Skolimowski. One of these is Tom Hall’s ‘Sensation’ which scored three IFTA nominations along with screenings at international film festivals such as Rotterdam, the BFI London Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Off Plus Camera in Eastern Europe is a festival dedicated to the world's independent cinema. The program looks to feature some of the newest and most highly-praised films from the festival circuit, boasting national cinematography showcases, themed sections, and retrospectives of some of the most revered names from the world of independent cinema.
