2011 marks the 19th anniversary of the GAZE film festival. The five-day cinematic showcase of Irish and International LGBT film will take place over the August bank holiday weekend and submissions are currently being accepted for a new competition entitled Absolut GAZE New Filmmakers Project.
Sponsored by Absolut and supported by Filmbase, the project is aimed at supporting emerging Irish talent in the funding of an original lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) themed short film. The chosen project will premiere during the Gaze festival which will take place this year from July 28th until August 1st with an additional support package prize (valued at €10,000) including assistance from script development through final post-production with both direct funding and in-kind support. In addition, filmmakers will receive hands-on advice from established Irish industry professionals.
Commenting on the launch of the new competition, GAZE Programme Director, Paul Rowley said: “We’re all very excited about the way the GAZE programme is coming together this year, and a huge part of this is the opportunity to support Irish filmmakers through the ABSOLUT GAZE New Filmmakers Project. We really encourage everyone to apply. It’s a great chance to get all your queer film ideas up on screen!”
The film proposals submitted should be for shorts of 5-10 minutes in length which can be live-action, documentary or animation projects. The submitted ideas must have an LGBT theme and must originate from and be creatively led by Irish talent or talent resident in Ireland.
The sponsorship of the 2011 Absolut GAZE new Filmmakers Project is Absolut Vodka’s second collaboration in film in Ireland following on from the preview of the Spike Jonze’s ‘I’m Here’ short film collaboration at last year’s Galway Arts Festival.
The deadline for submissions for the competition is Wednesday, April 20th. For full application details go to: www.gaze.ie
