Horgan and O’Brien Host Filmbase Workshop

Filmbase will host a workshop exploring the relationship between a film’s director and director of photography on Tuesday, March 15th. The event, entitled Director & Director of Photography: Illuminating the Relationship will run from 3:00pm to 5:30pm and will be hosted by award winning director Conor Horgan and award winning director of photography Ruairi O’Brien.

Filmbase has organized the workshop to examine the relationship between a director and director of photography looking, in particular, at the important dynamics affecting the shooting, style and success of a film. The workshop will look to explore the boundaries of the working relationship between the two creative disciplines.

The topics that Conor and Ruairi will cover throughout the workshop will include: Choosing Projects and Partners; Prep work for shooting; Authorship and Creative Decisions; Communication; Salvaging Catastrophes; Working with Cast and Working with other Crew. The pair will use personal insights and experiences along with clips from their own portfolios to illustrate their points.

Conor Horgan’s recent directing projects include feature docuemtnary, ‘The Beholder’; his first feature film, ‘One Hundred Mornings’ which received a special mention at the Slamdance Film Fesival and the IFTA nominated short, ‘Deep End Dance’. Conor is a board member of the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland and a Council member of the Irish Film Institute.

Ruairí O'Brien’s credits include the Sundance and IFTA award-winning film ‘Five Minutes Of Heaven’, ‘Murphy's Law’, the IFTA winning ‘Father And Son’ and recent TG4 series, ‘Corp + Anam’. He has also filmed over 25 short films and 25 music videos for acts that include Placebo and Ash.

The masterclass is recommended for aspiring filmmakers, DOPs and those seeking a greater understanding of the filmmaking process. The audience will be encouraged to join in a Q&A with the filmmakers throughout the session. The cost of the workshop is €10 for Filmbase Members and €15 for non-members.
