BBC Northern Ireland's IFTA winning current affairs programme, ‘Spotlight’ clinched two Royal Television Society (RTS) Journalism Awards at a ceremony held in London. The series’ special programme, ‘Spotlight: The Irish Robinson Investigation’ won awards in the categories of Scoop of the Year and Nations and Regions Current Affairs and News Event.
Presented by Darragh MacIntyre, the special programme made exclusive revelations on how politician Iris Robinson, wife of NI's First Minister, obtained £50,000 from two property developers to set up her 19-year-old lover in business. Featuring interviews with Mrs. Robinson's whistle-blowing former adviser and her former lover, the programme secured a 42% audience share. The report recently walked away with the IFTA award for Current Affairs on February 12th.
Peter Johnston, Director of BBC NI commented on the programmes recent wins, saying: "This is a fantastic win for our Spotlight team – particularly with a Northern Ireland story winning in the UK-wide Scoop Of The Year category – and comes hot on the heels of the success at the Irish Film and Television Awards earlier this month.”
Jeremy Adams, BBC NI’s Head of Television Current Affairs also commented on the win, noting that: "It's a tremendous achievement to be recognised by the Royal Television Society in this way, being awarded both the UK-wide Scoop Of The Year and Nations and Regions Current Affairs and News Event. The team put a great deal of time and dedication into what was a painstaking investigation and also one of the most important and talked about television investigations of the past year."
