Channel 4 should aim to spend 15% of its network budget on original shows from the UK’s nations and regions including Northern Ireland, the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee has recommended. The broadcaster is currently required to spend 3% of its programming budget on original content from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The recommendation was made in the committee’s annual report on C4, which scrutinises how well the broadcaster is fulfilling its remit. The Report urges Channel 4 to increase the proportion of UK-originated commissioning from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and proposes that Channel 4 CEO, David Abraham set a medium term target of 15% of network spend on originated programming coming from the nations.
The committee’s report explains the reasoning behind the request, stating: “We pressed in particular on the percentage of programming coming from the nations, noting that the quota of 3% of network spend on originated programming coming from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales was rather low, given a total population share of 15% of the UK population.”
David Abraham responded to the suggestion saying that as he has only held the position of CEO for three months and would need time to assess the situation. He told the committee that ”I can give my commitment that when I sit here in a year's time I will give you a fuller assessment."
