Irish/ Finnish co-production ‘Lapland Odyssey’ has broken records by becoming the best performing film in Finland in 2010. The film, co-produced by Ripple World Pictures, has been seen by over 335,000 people to date and had the strongest opening for a local film in 2010 and the fifth biggest opening for a local film in the last decade.
‘Lapland Odyssey’ a co-production between Ireland’s Ripple World Pictures, Finland’s Helsinki Filmi Oy and Sweden’s Anagram Produktion company claimed the top spot in the countdown of Finland’s most popular films in 2010 beating off competition from International blockbusters such as ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (305,000 admissions), ‘Avatar’ (284,000 admisssions), ‘Inception’ (253,000 admissions), ‘Toy Story 3’ (213,000 admissions). According to the preliminary box office statistics of 2010 ‘Lapland Odyssey’ and other local made film, Mari Rantasila´s ‘Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief‘ sold 27% of all admissions, which is a new record.
A comedic road movie, ‘Lapland Odyssey’ sold over 46,000 tickets in its opening weekend in Finnish cinemas. Directed by Dome Karukoski (Forbidden Fruit), the €2 million feature film is written by Pekko Pensonen (Over the Fence) and the Irish co-producers involved are Dominic Wright (Parked) and Jacqueline Kerrin (Earthbound). The film’s soundtrack was composed by Lance Hogan (Capital Letters) and the project’s post production was carried out by Sebastian Guest Dublin-based post-production house, Egg.
'Lapland Odyssey’ stars Jasper Pääkkönen (Hellsinki), Pamela Tola (Soap), Miia Nuutila (Jopet-Show) and Kari Ketonen (Sauna). According to the Finnish Film Association, Finnish films released sold more than 2 million tickets domestically in 2010, a level not seen since the country started keeping box office stats back in 1969.
'Lapland Odyssey’ will receive its Irish premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival whilst France’s DistriB Films acquired distribution rights to the feature following the film’s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival 2010. The film will be released theatrically in France on February 9th.
