3D Feature Adaptation of Swift's 'The Selfish Giant'
08 Dec 2010 :
Catherine Owens
A feature film version of Oscar Wilde’s short story, ‘The Selfish Giant’ has commenced its development process with Next Door Neighbor Productions. The feature is to be directed by Irish filmmaker and artist Catherine Owens and will be a mixture of 3D live action, motion capture and animation.

‘The Selfish Giant’ will tell Wilde’s 1888 story of a once selfish giant who welcomes the children to his previously forbidden garden and is eventually rewarded by an unusual little child. Director Catherine Owens has received interest in the project from several studios with whom she has strong relationships, and is currently planning the story development phase, which will take place early next year, with €34,000 development finance from the Irish Film Board / Bord Scannán na hÉireann.

Owens was co-director of the first live-action digital 3D film, ‘U23D’, which was released in 2008. Her initial concept for this new feature is to tell the story on a large visual canvas, working with experienced 3D directors of photography and post production and special effects people alongside well known actors. The shooting locations for the film are TBC.

Commenting on the upcoming process the director tells us: “I’m delighted to have been awarded development funding from the Irish Film Board for this project, which I have nurtured for quite some time now, and intend to treat with great care during the development and production process. As a much-loved piece of work from one of Ireland’s greatest writers, I will adapt the story appropriately for cinematic treatment, with the added addition of carefully crafted digital 3D production values to enhance the universal themes of the story.”

She also spoke about giving such classic literature the 3D treatment, saying: “Pairing this Irish literary great’s work to the latest in 3D technology will keep Ireland at the core of a global creative conversation about the future path for 3D film and 3D film makers. I look forward to continuing to work with the Irish Film Board throughout the process, alongside a major Hollywood studio partner.”
