RTÉ’s Project 2025 Gets the Green Light
29 Nov 2010 :
RTÉ has been given the go-ahead from An Bord Pleanála for a multi-million euro redevelopment of its Donnybrook site. The plan, entitled Project 2025 will involve housing all of RTÉ's facilities in one purpose-built complex including five television studios and a public plaza.

A recent planning hearing was told by the group that the redevelopment is necessary to allow RTÉ to adapt to the digital and high definition age which cannot be done within existing facilities.

RTÉ’S plans were met with objections from the nearby German Embassy as well as financier Dermot Desmond and other local residents however the planned development was given the green light by An Bord Pleanála and will mean the construction of three blocks of broadcasting facilities covering around half of the campus and rising to a height of nine storeys.

The project will also see the demolition of the radio centre as well as the multi-storey car park. Overall it will involve up to 15 years of construction in five stages and An Bord Pleanála has granted a 10-year planning permission to commence work because of the size of the development and the need to maintain broadcasting

The redevelopment plan was first announced in September 2009 when a Dublin City Council planned preparation and consideration of a new Dublin City Development Plan required that RTÉ, in common with other major landowners in the city, presented its long-term observations and plans.

Cathal Goan, then RTÉ Director General at that time commented on the timing of the announcement, saying: “Clearly this is not an ideal time to be announcing a large proposed construction project. But to remain competitive and to continue to give Irish viewers, listeners and web users the best possible services, we have to invest in new facilities built for the digital age. RTÉ has considered carefully the best way to upgrade and develop our broadcast production and transmission facilities while continuing to stay on air. We are confident that the most cost effective, sustainable and technically robust option available is to re-configure our existing site and incorporate all facilities into a single new building.”
